Description

BBE Music is excited to present ‘Distant Voice’, the new EP from London saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Sean Khan.

Founder of SK Radicals and pioneer of the UK Broken Beat sound, early in the new millennium Sean began collaborating with Bugz in the Attic, Kaidi Tatham, Daz-I-Kue, Recloose and Mark De Clive Lowe, carving out a sound which has gone on to influence artists all over the globe. Critically acclaimed solo projects and a successful live band followed, seeing Sean perform to sell-out crowds at Ronnie Scott’s and The Jazz Café. His most recent album project, 2016’s ‘Palmares Fantasy’, is a sumptuous Brazilian affair featuring legendary local musician Hermeto Pascoal, Azymuth drummer Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti and The Cinematic Orchestra’s front-woman Heidi Vogel.
With a new long player, ‘Supreme Love’, close to completion and slated for release on BBE in early 2020, Sean Khan’s ‘Distant Voice’ EP provides a compelling snapshot into his musical influences.

Says Sean: “I have always strived to make something beautiful, distilled down to the essence of the sound I am looking for. This means I really have to know soul music, jazz music, some classical music etc., in order to be convincing. So I have taken 4 different genres and played with them in my own way. ‘Feel the Light’ is my take on spiritual soul, ‘The Chaos’ is my take on the Parliament funk thing with some politics thrown in, ‘The Long Goodbye’ is my take on the quintessential UK sound of trip hop, and finally I went all out on ‘The Savage Detectives’ and played some almost pure free-jazz-free-funk.”

Describing himself as a “career outsider”, during the Broken Beat era Sean Khan found himself bringing a musician’s ear to a scene dominated by DJs and producers. “I heard music in a slightly different way, not better or worse, just slightly different” he says. Thanks to his work in electronic music, he found himself bringing an equally different approach to the world of jazz. It is this outlier status that gives the EP its name: a Distant Voice, inviting the listener to come on a journey away from names and labels, travelling closer to the essence.
