The Kings Of Hip Hop

What is hip hop ?

If one youth movement has been pre-eminent in the shaping of popular culture in the last twenty-five years, it is hip hop. Born in the mid 70’s as a soundtrack to block parties in New York, it spread across America and then the world, constantly evolving & reinventing itself. From Afrika Bambaataa’s Zulu Nation to gansta rap, hip hop has been used as party music and as protest music, to provoke and to enlighten. Today it is a multi-million-pound industry that dominates record sales worldwide, and influences international fashion, language and youth culture.

Depends who you ask, this was one of the ‘better’ insights, ‘Hip hop to me is just a way of life, it’s a culture. The culture is comprised of so many different elements, so many things that are changeable, and other things that are just unspoken, things that are just felt. It’s a very kinetic culture’ Black Thought – The Roots
