Slavic Souls
Description
Slavic Souls is the 4th studio album from hugely popular Finnish jazz sextet Dalindèo. Described by band leader Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen as a “Surf-Jazz-Tango-Extravaganza”, the LP blends comtemporary jazz with traditional Finnish Tango music and northern ‘schlager’, a form of ‘easy listening’ which takes onboard influences from traditional Nordic and Slavic folk songs.
Following up 2015’s award winning Kallio, one of the most popular Finnish jazz records in recent memory, Slavic Souls takes a somewhat darker turn, full of psychedelic atmospheres and minor chords. But while some classic Slavic gloominess is clearly in evidence, so is the irrepressible Soul. As Valtteri puts it, “What’s not to like about a melancholic party song?”
Featuring Anna-Kristiina Kaappola, Finland’s premiere coloratura-soprano singer and with cover art created by renowned cartoonist Timo Mäkelä, Slavic Souls offers an enticingly fresh look at Finland’s musical past, written and performed by a group of the country’s most impressive and original contemporary players.
