Kenny Dope feat. Róisín Murphy - Born Under Punches (And The Heat Goes On)

Legendary producer Kenny Dope teams up with genre-defying vocalist Róisín Murphy for a heavy, head-nodding rework of Talking Heads’ “Born Under Punches,” taken from Naive Melodies, an expansive tribute to Talking Heads’ rhythmic legacy, curated by Drew McFadden, the DJ-Producer behind BBE’s celebrated Modern Love (David Bowie tribute).

As one-half of Masters at Work, Kenny Dope has spent decades shaping the sound of underground dance music, blending house, hip-hop, Latin, and funk into raw, percussive grooves. Here, he transforms “Born Under Punches” into a deep, dubbed-out psych-funk workout – grounded in gritty drums, warped synth textures, and live instrumentation that nods to Fela Kuti, electro, and early NYC dance floors.

Róisín Murphy, best known as the magnetic voice of Moloko and a longtime boundary- pusher in art-pop and disco, brings hypnotic vocal swagger to the track, channeling the paranoia and propulsion of the original while giving it a bold new emotional and physical edge.

With its analog grit and cosmic thump, “Born Under Punches” expands the sonic scope of Naive Melodies, a project that revisits the rhythmic DNA of Talking Heads through the lens of global Black innovation – from dub and samba to soul, jazz, and funk. Kenny and Róisín don’t just cover a classic, they submerge it in something altogether stranger, deeper, and entirely their own.
