Audrey Powne - Swollen

Nr: BBE829SDG22026

Description

Australian-born, London-based Audrey Powne is a trumpeter, vocalist, and self-producing artist whose 2024 debut From the Fire drew widespread critical acclaim. Since relocating from Melbourne to London, she has quickly become a standout presence in the city’s thriving jazz scene; a virtuosic performer and adventurous bandleader with a sound that is entirely her own.

“Swollen” is the second single from Audrey Powne’s sophomore album Bodies of Water (BBE Music, September 25, 2026), and a compelling statement of intent from one of jazz’s most exciting new voices.

A self-produced collision of spiritual jazz, swung hip-hop, and forward-thinking production, the track sits in distinguished company, referencing the lineage of Miles Davis while operating in the same genre-fluid space as Robert Glasper, Bilal, and Theo Croker. Built on a tough ostinato bassline and fractured swing rhythms, it moves fluidly between jazz tradition and contemporary pop with complete authority.

Lyrically, “Swollen” deals with the emotional wreckage of a toxic relationship, rendered through Powne’s dual role as vocalist and trumpeter, two voices that alternate between control and cathartic release. The production mirrors this tension, balancing live ensemble performance with electronic processing and densely layered textural overdubs.

Featuring Jonathan Barber on drums and David Ginyard on bass, the track was recorded at Electric Garden Studios, Brooklyn, mixed by Lewis Moody, and mastered by Frank Merritt.
