Mega Jawns - Silver Lining
Description
Producer/DJ Sumsuch and vocalist/musician Will Brock present Silver Lining, a downtempo soul gem taken from their 2014 debut album ‘Ten Letters From Home’. Releasing on Urban Torque and his own ‘Colour and Pitch’ label, Sumsuch has been honing his distinctive style of deep-thinking electronic music for some years now, while Will Brock earned his jazz/soul stripes on the road, touring the globe with The Stylistics, Miles Jaye & Marion Meadows among others. Within hours of meeting for the first time, the pair had gone to ground in a basement studio somewhere in West Philly, emerging a week later with an entire album’s worth of music.
Aside from their obvious musical chemistry, the pair discovered they had a lot more in common, despite having been born on opposite sides of the pond. A discussion about childhood experiences followed, especially the roles of both their mothers, which formed the basis of the lyrics to ‘Silver Lining’. As Brock puts it “we both figured we owed both our moms at least one song by now…” A simple and heartfelt tribute, ‘Silver Lining’ blends soulful harmonies and jazzy keys from Brock, while Sumsuch’s smooth production gives a nod to 80’s R&B & jazz-fusion ballads (think 52nd Street).
To remix the track, the pair roped in mutual friend and local hero Mr Cisum, who provides a remake brimming with bona fide Philly Soul. An engineer at the legendary Third Story Recording Studio in the late 90s, over the years Cis has worked with King Britt, James Poyser, Vikter Duplaix, Common, The Roots, Jill Scott & Schoolly D among others, as well as being a founder member of local hip hop crew ‘Name’. His old-school, melodic hip hop version takes Silver Lining to new heights; re-framing a brand new song and somehow making it sound like a familiar classic.
