Developing their own sound and twist on modern hip hop, psychedelic and soul, New Zealandís Electric Wire Hustle has forged a fresh sound that challenges genre boundaries and preconceptions.
The music of EWH reaches forward while referencing key points of musicís past. Thick drums and percussion layered with synth lines, hints of Fender Rhodes and nylon stringed guitars have your neck snapping while your ear cranes to the evocative vocals of Mara TK.
I recorded the verse in three differing styles for this tune before finally getting
something that worked. Itís easy for that heavily layered counterpoint vocal style
to sound a bit like a musical pinball machine; things popping out at you all over
the show - theme park house of horrors style. I think the result is a bit more chilled than that thankfully. Benji B selected it for his top 10 tracks of 2009 which was an honor for us.
Again - Scratch 22 Remix
I first met 22 at a DMC battle in Auckland, both of us young budding turntablists.
He was probably the most musical DJ out of all of us, taking a real composerís
approach to his battle sets, rather than the Muhhamed Ali method of degradation
and methodical pummeling. His productions are equally as thought out;
incredibly widely-listened, he creates beats ranging from NYC style hip-hop to
punk rock and (good) pop songs. What a guy.
